Announcements:A Call for ArtisansHoliday at the Heard and Artisan’s Market:
Do you, or someone you know, make a hand-crafted item either utilizing some of nature’s resources or depicting nature? If so, then why not consider selling those wares as a unique holiday gift item at the Heard’s own “Artisan’s Market?” This market will be one of the featured activities promoted during our “Holidays at the Heard” planned for Saturday, December 6. The Heard anticipates a large crowd that day as almost 1,000 people attended last year’s event. Space is extremely limited and will be reserved on a first-come, first-paid basis. The cost for artisans to participate is only a nominal $25. Computer SkillsThe Battering Intervention and Prevention Program (BIPP) at Hope’s Door provides abusive individuals an opportunity to learn tools to avoid future abusive behavior. Volunteers with database experience are needed to provide clerical support for this program. Group Support volunteers are also needed to use computer/clerical skills, greet clients, and assist with group sessions once a week. For additional details, use keyword BIPP on the VMC website.
Donate ToiletriesVisiting Nurse Association is planning to give their Hospice and Home Health patients a gift bag with basic health needs. If you can donate full size toiletries including shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, bar soap, and wash clothes, VNA will wrap and deliver the gift bags. Exchange ProgramSHARE! is a high school exchange program seeking host families for teens from around the world. Families—with or without children—are needed to share their homes and the American way of life. The students speak English, are covered by medical insurance, and have spending money for their personal expenses. Use keyword “Share” on the VMC website for additional details. Family FeastHoly Family School, offering preschool children the opportunity to grow, develop, and learn in a Christian environment, is seeking volunteers to help serve at the annual lunch for students and their families on November 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers are invited to eat lunch. Home ImprovementH.E.A.R.T.H. (Hearts Energized and Ready to Help) is a volunteer-driven home repair program for homeowners unable to complete their own home repairs. Volunteers from churches, businesses, social groups as well as individuals paint and repair homes to make them more livable. Examples of current home repair needs include reinforcing plywood floors, replacing carpet, replacing drywall, and texturing and painting. Funds are available for reimbursement of supplies. Mentor a StudentREACH is a school-based mentoring program to improve students’ self-esteem and self-confidence as well as motivate the student to improve personal and social skills. Mentors work one-on-one with a child during school hours. Mentors are needed at several elementary campuses and all middle school campuses. Nursing Home AngelsMcKinney area Care Centers and Nursing Homes depend on volunteers to provide entertainment and companionship for their residents. They would love for you to share a talent, an interest, or just your time. Spanish-speaking tutors/mentorsWebb Elementary is seeking Spanish-speaking volunteers to work with students one-on-one or in groups to help motivate and encourage students to become successful in their academic and social lives. Tutors/mentors are asked to volunteer 30 minutes to one hour a week between 8:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. Use keywords “CIS Webb” on the VMC website for more information.
Special DeliveryFrisco Family Services plans to deliver Thanksgiving food boxes on November 22. Families, business groups, and individuals are sought to help prepare and deliver the boxes to families in need. Taste of Collin CountyHabitat for Humanity will be holding its annual “Taste of Collin County® ” Monday, February 23, 2009 where guests may sample food from Collin County restaurants. In addition to great food there will be entertainment, live auctions, and a beer and wine garden. This annual event raises tens of thousands of dollars to benefit Habitat for Humanity’s mission to build decent affordable housing for God’s people in need. Over 100 volunteers are needed to help with planning and organizing as well as day-of-the-event activities in order to make this fun and exciting event successful. Volunteer McKinney...Connecting people who can help with people who need help!Volunteers can change our community, making it a better place for all of us to live. There are a number of people that need your help. Take the time to serve the homeless, play music for the elderly, bring alive the history of this community in a museum, walk a homeless dog, advocate for a child, or assist in disasters. The opportunities are endless. Volunteering not only reaches out and serves but it also brings out the very best in not only the recipient but also the volunteer.
